Air Fryer Problems and Fixes

Most air fryer problems come from three causes: too much food in the basket, fat reaching the hot element, or a basket that needs cleaning. The fixes below cover the issues owners report most often.

White smoke during cooking

White smoke usually means fat is hitting the heating element or residue is burning off. Stop the cook, let the unit cool, and wipe the element area and drawer.

For very fatty foods, cook at a slightly lower temperature and empty rendered fat from the drawer partway through.

Fries come out soggy instead of crisp

Dry the cut potatoes, toss with a small amount of oil, and cook in a single layer with space between pieces. Shake or turn halfway.

If the basket was packed, split the batch. Two crisp batches beat one soggy one.

Food browns unevenly

Uneven browning points to blocked airflow. Arrange food in one layer, avoid oversized pieces mixed with small ones, and shake or flip at the halfway mark.

Also confirm the crisper plate is seated correctly so air can circulate underneath.

Food sticks to the basket

Preheat the basket briefly, use a light oil spray on the food rather than aerosol propellant sprays on the coating, and let proteins release naturally before turning.

If sticking persists, the nonstick surface may be worn. A perforated parchment liner restores easy release.

Lingering odors and a plastic smell

New units can carry a manufacturing smell for the first few cycles. Run the empty fryer at 400 degrees F for 10 minutes in a ventilated kitchen before first use.

For food odors, wash the basket, wipe the interior, and cook a lemon half at 350 degrees F for a few minutes to freshen the cavity.

No shake reminder sounds during longer cooks

On models with a personalized shake reminder, the prompt is set per preset rather than once for the machine, so a preset saved without it will stay silent. Open the preset you use for fries or wings, add the shake reminder to that preset, and save it again so the chime returns halfway through longer cooks. If your model has no reminder, set a halfway timer instead and shake or flip at that point, since the halfway shake is what keeps browning even in a single layer. Check the crisper plate is seated correctly too, so air circulates underneath while you cook.

Viewing window clouds over during cooking

The ClearCook window on models like the Instant Vortex Plus clouds when grease from fatty foods such as wings coats the inside glass. Let the unit cool, then wipe the window after each fatty cook instead of letting residue bake on. That habit preserves the window and interior light benefit, which is checking browning without opening the basket and losing heat.

FAQ

Questions, answered straight

Why does my air fryer trip the breaker?

Most fryers draw 1500 to 2000 watts. Running one on the same circuit as a microwave or kettle can trip a breaker. Give the fryer its own outlet while it runs.

Can I fix a peeling basket coating?

Peeling coating should not be cooked on. Contact the manufacturer about a replacement basket, which most brands sell separately, rather than continuing to use a damaged surface.

Why does the fryer keep pausing when I open it?

That is a safety design. Most models pause the fan and element when the drawer opens and resume when it closes. If yours does not resume, check that the drawer is fully seated.
